The BFAV confirmed BSE in a German Simmenthal dairy cow that according to information forwarded by the BMVEL had been born on the farm and had been killed because of symptoms not suspicious of BSE. The problem is, however, that there are no symptoms which are specifically pathognomic for BSE. One should have considered BSE as a possible diagnosis taking into account the decreasing milk yield, footing problems and recumbency. One would expect simple clinical tests for BSE as recommended by Prof. Braun (reaction to light, touch and sounds) would have supported a clinical BSE suspicion.
