AB There is a chain of complex chemical and electrical events between the stimulus of tissue injury, reflex and behaviour manifestations and the subjective experience of pain. This chain consists of four basic processes: transduction, transmission, modulation and perception. Well developed sensory systems, including receptors particularly sensitive to noxious stimuli, are found throughout the animal kingdom. Anthropomorphism in the interpretation of animal behaviour can be used cautiously and only in the context of other scientific evidence.
