AB Concussion stunning of slaughter animals by means of a blow on the head with a special instrument is the oldest stunning method. This stunning method has probably taken place in Western Europe since the 11th century. Concussion stunning of animals is of interest for various reasons. Thirty-one veal calves, equipped with surgically pre-implanted EEG electrodes, were stunned with a non-penetrating knocker and the effectivity of this concussion stunning method was investigated. Successful EEG tracings after stunning were produced in 27 out of 31 calves. Effective stunning was achieved in 15 out of 19 calves when the knocker was placed frontally and in 3 out of 8 calves when it was placed on the poll. A haemorrhage of the nose was observed in 22 and a cerebral haemorrhage in 15 out of 31 calves. Based on the results as well as those obtained by others and in other species, it is suggested that effectivity of concussion stunning is insufficient to be acceptable as a routine method of stunning in slaughter-houses.
