AB 1. Carp immobilized with a muscle relaxant were exposed to high concentrations of CO2 (PwCO2 = 175 mm Hg, PwOP2 = 350 mm Hg, PHw = 4,9) or MS 222 (1/8,000) for 30 min. 2. The EEG of carp anesthetized with CO2 gradually became smaller in amplitude, with slowing of the wave and showed a pronounced tendency toward flatness. On perfusion with fresh water, the EEG pattern demonstrated a gradual recovery. 3. In contrast to the action of CO2, MS 222 did not cause flatness of the EEG, but conversely caused an increase in the amplitude at ranges adjacent to 8.0 Hz during anesthesia. During the recovery process, the ranges adjacent to 4.5 Hz showed a transient decrease in amplitude. 4. It can be concluded that CO2 exerts its anesthetic action by acting on the central nervous system and probably by depressing brain activity.
