AB There are severe welfare problems associated with the pre-slaughter handling and transport of broiler chickens as assessed by dead-on-arrivals, physical injury, carcass characteristics, physiological stress responses, fearfulness and aversion. Increased automation of handling procedures may be one route to reducing physical damage and stress but there is evidence that movement is also a potent stressor. Further research is needed to identify the specific stimuli responsible for the high levels of fearfulness and aversion elicited by transportation. Substantial work also remains to be done to improve the thermal environment of the lorry.
