AB The issue of transmission of prions from human to human via blood transfusion or through the administration of blood components or plasma derivatives has been a cause for concern among health professionals throughout the world. Despite no clear evidence of the transmission of prions from a human blood donor who later developed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease(CJD) to a recipient, some investigators believe there is a theoretical risk. What can be made of the available experimental and epidemiological and how should they be interpreted? In the case of the experimental data, are they quality data, generated from experimental designs employing adequate controls and safeguards against potential contaminations? Such controls and safeguards are particularly essential in the field of prion diseases like CJD, because of the extraordinary resistance of prions to standard decontamination methods.
