AB SPONGIFORM encephalopathies have been recognised in a variety of species including man, goats, sheep, mink, cattle and captive wild bovidae, including a number of species of deer. In addition, a spongiform encephalopathy of unknown aetiology has been described in ostriches. The first case of feline spongiform encephalopathy (FSE) in a domestic cat was recognised at the University of Bristol veterinary school in April 1990. By May 1995, a total of 67 cases had been reported nationally. In addition, FSE has been recorded in a domestic cat in Norway and in three species of captive wild felidae (cheetah, puma and ocelot).
