AB This paper outlines the development of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in the United Kingdom. The relationship between BSE and new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is considered and the risks of iatrogenic spread reviewed. The rationale for disposable surgical instruments in adenotonsillectomy to prevent iatrogenic spread is discussed.
