AB An International Conference on Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies or prion diseases was held in Edinburgh from 15th to 18th September 2002, hosted by the committee of the Edinburgh TSE Initiative (Jan Fraser, Mark Head, Nora Hunter, Martin Jeffrey, and Mark Woolhouse). The conference covered five major themes: pathogenesis; PrP structure and cell biology; BSE and vCJD diagnostics and therapeutic strategies; TSE genetics and transgenic models; and epidemiology and surveillance. In addition to the 10 invited speakers, 30 platform presentations were chosen from the submitted abstracts, and over 170 posters were displayed.
