DUBLIN - Ireland's first case of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD), linked to eating beef infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), has been diagnosed in Dublin, hospital authorities said Friday.
"We can confirm that one patient has presented with symptoms consistent with variant CJD," Nicholas Jermyn, chief executive of St Vincent's University Hospital in south Dublin said in a statement. He said the hospital would review the records of 49 other patients who underwent a similar medical procedure around the time of the patient confirmed as having the disease.
CJD, a degenerative brain disorder, occurs naturally in one million people while the new variant identified in 1996 has been linked to the consumption of beef infected with BSE, also known as mad cow disease. So far 39 people have died from nvCJD. All forms of CJD are incurable and always fatal.
BSE swept through cattle herds in the 1980s. It was traced to feed made of the remains of sheep that had been infected with scrapie, their version of the disease. In Ireland, BSE in cattle was first noted in 1989 and there have been 377 cases to date.
