AB An 18 year old boy with severe and late symptoms of vCJD diagnosed using tonsillar biopsy, was treated using low dose, intraventricular long-term infusion of pentosan polysulphate. No neurological side effects were seen, and no effects on blood clotting in the blood were found. At the time of treatment he was unresponsive to pain, and had no ability to speak, or apparently to hear or see. Compared to his original corporate weight in 2001, he had lost approximately 15 kg. He was incontinent of urine and faeces and could not swallow. His life expectancy was considerd to be less than 1 month at the time of the neurosurgery. Five months following the start of PPS infusion he has now (June 2003)regained the weight lost, he is no long incontinent of either faeces or urine and can swallow on command. He now responds to pain and is apparently able to see. The intense ethical and political problems that took place with this treatment, along with the considered mechanisms of action of the drug will be presented.
