AB We searched for PrPc in the placentas of 10 pregnant women. Ten placenta samples and three brain samples were used in experiments. 3F4 antibody was used in Western blotting analysis. PrPc was detected in all placenta samples, and concentrations were similar to the those of brain samples. In both types of tissue, we observed same glycosylation pattern. The presence of PrPc in human placenta along with earlier findings of infectivity in scrapie infected sheep placentas raises a question whether placentas may be involved in spreading CJD in human population.
