Several marker antigens have been used to establish immunochemical detection methods for central nervous tissue in foods. So far, a major drawback of these tests ist that the antibodies used in these tests are non-specific for bovine tissue. One of the reasons may be due to the fact that murine antibodies do not differenciate between proteins from genetically distant species. In this paper we use an alternative approach to develop a sandwich enzyme immunoassay which is specific for central nervous tissue from bovines, utilizing combinations of antibodies which were raised in species other than mouse. First results for an immunochemical test system for bovine glial fibrillary acidic protein will be presented in this paper.
