TI Normal prion-protein expression reported

QU Lancet 1998; 351(9104): 729

PT editorial

VT Researchers report this month that cellular prion protein (PrPc) is expressed in CD34-positive stem cells, very early in haemopoiesis. PrPc expression is essential for prion disease pathogenesis, so Vincent Dodelet and Neil Cashman (McGill University, Montreal, Canada) suggest that bone-marrow cells might harbour the infectious prion-disease agent. Thus, bone marrow should perhaps be considered a high-risk tissue (Blood 1998; 91: 1556-61).
