PT Article

AB Before 1985 only sheep and goat scrapie, transmissible encephalopathy of farm-reared mink and chronic wasting disease in wild American ruminants were the only known animal transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE). The appearance in Great Britain of an enzootic form of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) has provoked heightened interest in both veterinary circles and in medical research in the uncertainty concerning risks linked to this type of disease due to a prion. The example of animal TSE, and more particularly BSE, demonstrates the necessity of vigilance by vetinarians with regard to animal health and also in terms of human health. The current evolution of enzootic BSE, which is beginning to decrease, must not make us less vigilant concerning this type of disease. The ''latest information on TSEs shows that the situation must be constantly re- evaluated''.
