AB The European Community required BSE-testing of cattle over the age of 30 months. In Germany, due to the 'Verordnung zur fleischhygienerechtlichen Untersuchung von geschlachteten Rindern auf BSE', cattle from the age of 24 months are tested for BSE (additional testing for perished, ill, or emergency slaughtered animals). For slaughtered cattle the so-called BSE quick-test is applied. For this test hindbrain material is taken and send to an acknowledged BSE testing laboratory. Of the submitted sample only a small portion of tissue is used for the analysis with the quick test. Therefore it is essential that the lab personal is reliably capable of identifying and removing the specimen from the suitable location (obex region). After a short survey of the anatomical structure of the brain, the relevant regions will be examined more closely and their significance towards BSE will be discussed. The sampling technique will be described and possible sources of errors demonstrated.
