AB A routinely usable alkaline cleaner for medical devices and a phenolic disinfectant were tested for their capacity to inactivate prions. Co-incubation of brain homogenates prepared from terminally ill scrapie-infected hamsters with the cleaner/disinfectant led to the denaturation of misfolded protein as proteinase K-resistant prion protein was no longer detectable after treatment. In addition, intracerebral inoculation of hamsters with neutralized cleaner/disinfectant-incubated samples reduced the level of infectivity of the material below the limit of detection. This report demonstrates the potency of a routinely usable alkaline cleaner and a phenolic disinfectant to reduce the infectivity of prions and to minimize the risk of iatrogenic transmissions of prion diseases by asymptomatic carriers. Our study encourages further investigations in this field.
