VT 11.0 ANIMAL AND HUMAN SPONGIFORM ENCEPHALOPATHIES
Report of the WHO Informal Consultation on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy in the United Kingdom
Geneva, 7 May 1993
World Health Organization 1993, WHO/VPH/93.119, 8 pages
This report reviews the current state of research being carried out on transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) and examines the results of epidemiological studies conducted on bovine spongiform encephalo-pathy (BSE) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in the United Kingdom. The report concludes that the BSE epidemic is on the decline and that the policies adopted in the United Kingdom are suficient to minimize the risk of exposure to BSE for all species, including humans. The occurrence of a case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in a person occupationally exposed to a cow with BSE is likely to have been a chance occurrence; any causative link with BSE is, at most, speculative.
Report of a WHO Consultation on Public Health Issues Related to Animal and Human Spongiform Encephalopathies
Geneva, 12-14 November 1991, World Health Organization 1992, WHO/CDS/VPH/92.104, 19 pages
This report reviews current knowledge on all the known spongiform encephalopathies, including their routes of transmission and associated hazards. Particular attention is given to the possible hazards of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and related animal diseases linked to the use of animal tissues as animal feed, human food, and in the preparation of medicinal and other products for human use. The consultation proposed a classification of tissues to be used as a guide to the possible BSE infectivity of bovine materials. It also made recommendations to national health authorities for the prevention of BSE in cattle and proposed measures to minimize the risks to humans associated with the consumption of food, with certain occupations, and with the use of medicinal and other products of bovine origin.
