PT Workshop

VT DR. WILLIAM D. HUESTON:
My name is Dr. Will Hueston. I am absolutely thrilled to be serving as host for this Workshop on TSE Risks in Relation to Source Materials, Processing, and End-Product Use. It is my responsibility as we start the meeting to assure that all of you are familiar with the housekeeping details of the meeting. This is the inaugural event of an interesting and unique collaboration between the University of Maryland and the Food and Drug Administration about which you will hear several people comment today. This collaboration is called the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition, or JIFSAN. This is a scientific meeting, not a regulatory meeting, something that I will try to emphasize again and again. We have set the stage for scientists to join together from industry, from academia, and from government agencies to talk about the science underlying our evaluation of TSE risks.
Let me make sure that we're all starting from a common foundation. You should have picked up a package of materials out front. In this package materials are four (4) different items. There is a small brochure about JIFSAN, a little bit of advertisement. There is a yellow flyer that talks about transportation, and provides transportation options to many of the area hotels for those of you who do not have your own cars. There is also a list of the pre-registered participants for your benefit. And finally, there is the blue document which if you will take a moment, I'll walk you through. First, I'd like you to draw your attention to the inside of the front cover. There is a list here of the collaborating agencies and organizations, without whom we could not have hosted this meeting and with whom we look forward to publicizing and taking forward the ideas and concepts that emerge from this meeting. That includes the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, the International Office of des Epizooties, the US Department of Agriculture, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the World Health Organization. And you will have opportunities, over the next few days, to hear representatives from a number of these organizations speak about their interests in this workshop. I also would like to draw your attention to the back cover. The inside of the back cover lists the public sponsors and these are organizations which have contributed funds to help with the development to help bring about this meeting. That includes the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition; the Department of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the United Kingdom; and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of New Zealand; and the Swiss Federal Veterinary Office. In addition, we are very pleased to have received several special travel awards and they are noted at the bottom to allow the participation of a broader segment of individuals in this scientific meeting. On the back are private sponsors by level of their sponsorship including a number of organizations, industry groups, professional groups and others that have been very important sponsors in this meeting. I want to thank the Coalition of Gelatin Capsule Manufacturers, Det Norske Veritas, the Gelatin Manufacturers of Europe, McDonald's Corporation, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association of America, Ralston Purina, the National Renderers Association, American Meat Institute, American Association of Tissue Banks, and Taylor By-Products. All of them have contributed so much to help bring about this meeting.
Now within this blue book, you will see it starts off with a copy of the Table of Contents on page three (3). You will notice the program from page four (4) to page seven (7) and we will be indicating to you where there are minor modifications to the program thanks to such uncontrollable events as airline strikes. Following on page eight (8) is a draft document of the critical elements involved in evaluation of sourcing, processing and end product use. This outline, we hope, you will find as an opportunity to share with us your insights on the critical factors which must be considered in evaluating TSE risks. At the reception tonight, you will have an opportunity to note your interests or your concerns, or your insights on this outline. It's followed then by a section of abstracts and below each abstract is a biographical sketch of the presenter. In the back are also abstracts from the posters that will be presented. And at the end of the document is a short information piece about the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition.
All right, I want to start us out on time. I also want to encourage you as we walk through the schedule, we are going to attempt to keep everyone pretty much to the schedule, we have a packed agenda. I also want to encourage if you have or as you have questions, please step to the microphone. That will enable all the people in the room to both hear you and it will also enable us, we're trying to catch or capture a transcript of this meeting so we can take back each of your valuable comments and insights and that facilitate us to hearing and understanding your statements and your comments. With that, I am pleased to introduce my, the co-host for this meeting, and this is Dr. Kiki Hellman. Dr. Hellman is a Senior Scientist with the Centers for Devices and Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration. But in this capacity, she serves as the co-host for this JIFSAN meeting and speaks not in her governmental role but rather as a co-host for this scientific meeting. Dr. Hellman...
