TI Fungal prions - when proteins turn into genes

QU The Biochemist 2005 Aug; 27(4)

AB Prions are infectious proteic particles devoid of nucleic acids that can cause devastating neurological disorders in mammals. Prions have also been identified in simpler organisms, namely unicellular yeasts and filamentous fungi. These fungal prions represent valuable model systems because they are safe to handle and, compared with mammalian prions, easier to study. In this article, we summarize the basic characteristics of the fungal prions and attempt to describe how their discovery has affected and expanded the prion concept.
