AB In Switzerland, CJD surveillance comprises clinical assessment, biopsies and autopsies as well as biochemical and genetic analyses of suspected CJD patients. From 1996 to 2000, the number of sporadic CJD patients ranged from eight to 11 per year, corresponding to an annual incidence of 1.3-1.4 cases per million. Since 2001, the incidence increased to 2.2-2.6 cases per million per year.
Here we describe the clinical and pathological spectrum of CJD patients from 1996-2004 where active surveillance has been performed. Because of the heightened incidence in CJD cases, patients were grouped into two time periods, 1996-2000 and 2001-2004, and a CJD subtype analysis was performed according to the molecular classification of sporadic CJD. We observed an increase in CJD patients of the less frequent MV2 and VV2 subtype from 2001-2004 as compared to 1996-2000 and also to published data from other European surveillance studies. These patients were on average 10 years older than previously reported. A higher male/female ratio (1.6:1) was observed from 2001-2004 when compared to 1996-2000 (1.1:1) with an over-representation of the MV2 and VV2 subtype in male (70%) versus female patients (30%) of the respected time period.
