AB No known TSE inactivation method is applicable for blood or blood components, although some TSE removal strategies have been shown to be effective. A blood screening test could help to remove the source of infectivity by detecting at least a proportion of prospective blood donors in the pre-clinical stage of vCJD. Several such tests are under active developmet, based on either amplification or ligand technologies to detect PrPtse. Blood test data will be presented for a method using palindromic polypeptide ligand with properties of conformational dependence and amplification.
