the present study we estimated the effect of the QQ171 genotype on the prevalence of scrapie cases in the affected flocks. Our survey was carried on 3,074 Sarda sheep, from 10 flocks with a recent history of clinical cases of scrapie. Disease prevalence for each flock was estimated by testing the scrapie susceptible QQ171 sheep slaughtered following European regulations.
In 3 flocks (Group 1) QQ171 frequency was less than the average for the Sarda sheep population (range 23.66% - 24.79%) with a mean scrapie prevalence of 11.46%. In 5 flocks (Group 2) QQ171 frequency conformed to the average of the Sarda sheep population (range 36.51 % - 38.43%) with a mean scrapie prevalence of 16,22%. In the last 2 flocks (Group 3) QQ171 frequency was higher than the average for the Sarda sheep population (range 47.54% -53.59%) with a mean scrapie prevalence of 32%.
Data were analysed with a logistic regression in order to estimate, within each group, the risk of sheep with the susceptible genotype (QQ171) becoming sick. Statistical analysis of the results shows that sheep in Group 3 are more likely to develop scrapie than sheep in Group 2 and 1. However not all the data is consistent with the above finding, as one flock with high scrapie prevalence is in Group 1, while one with low scrapie prevalence is in Group 2. More research is necessary on these discrepancies, taking into consideration the involvement of unknown genetic factors or different scrapie strains in the flocks.
