PT Conference abstract
AB Scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), chronic wasting disease (CWD), and transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) are transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) of animals. Scrapie naturally affects sheep and goats, CWD elk and deer, TME ranched mink and BSE cattle. BSE is the only animal TSE which has been shown to have a causal relationship with a human TSE, called variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD). In the past decade, experimental transmission of scrapie, CWD and TME into cattle has been performed at the National Animal Disease Center. Clinicopathological and molecular features of these experimental prion diseases in cattle will be described in detail and compared to the two BSE cases identified in U.S. cattle.
