AB BSE remains a serious problem for the food industry. The author analyses this issue from a scientific perspective. He explains that BSE is not an epidemic disease but rather an illness of individual cows; it may occur either through cannibalism induced by man or possibly also spontaneously. Further research must be undertaken to clarify its cause. However, there is no need to panic, because prions, the potential triggers of BSE, have never been found in bovine muscle-meat or cows' milk. As a consequence their consumption should not present any danger to mankind. The author also addresses the question how the cow disease and the human Creutzfeld-Jacob-Disease map be related. He concludes with critical remarks on public measures trying to deal with the current problems and puts forward common sense proposals for possible solutions. In his opinion only an interdisciplinary approach can solve the BSE crisis with dignity.
