TI Electronic identification of sheep with particular reference to scrapie certification

QU Agri-Practice 1994; 15(7): 28-31

PT Article

AB Use of electronic identification (ID) in sheep is discussed including information on the Scrapie Certification Program. Electronic ID allows for permanent identification, although challenges have been imposed by FDA requirements in that the identification chip must be safely and consistently removed from carcasses. Recommendations for placement in order to comply with this requirement are given. With simple insertion, minimal tissue response, permanence and security, the chip can be a viable means of identifying sheep. The main disadvantage is that in some operations, a form of visible identity as well is necessary for on-farm management.
