PT Article
AB The Public Health hazards linked with the appearance and extension of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) are presented and discussed in the context of the european epidemiologic situation, which is characterized by a major epizootics in UK and sporadic cases in other countries that declared the disease. Knowledge on the spongiform encephalopathies, including interspecific transmission factors (dosis and routes of transmission, species barrier) allows an evaluation of these risks. These data led to legal measures to prevent transmission of professional, dietary or iatrogenic origin for bovine as well as for humans. The sanitary measures are also based on data gathered on spongiform encephalopathies other than BSE (including ovine scrapie) and take into account the diversity of epidemiological situations in the different countries. As a whole, these measures seem appropriate to prevent transmission of the disease to humans, but there is a need for increased knowledge on this group of diseases.
