PT Review

AB Cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) have been described in an increasing number of European countries in the last couple of years. The public closely follows the occurrence and eradication of the disease. Methods to identify BSE cases which were based on mandatory reporting animals displaying clinical signs compatible with BSE have been extended by an active and targeted surveillance of cattle. Active surveillance represents a considerable tool in the monitoring of the eradication. According to the knowledge of the disease, eradication measures have been continuously adapted and intensified.
