SIRS, We were interested to read the letter by Drs Martinsen and Waldum. The reason for not including a section on the effect of proton pump inhibitors on enteroviruses and prions is due to the lack of available data on this subject. This is a fact which the authors of the letter highlight in their own recent reviews. The one paper which examined the effect of ranitidine on susceptibility to scrapie was statistically inconclusive.
We certainly agree with Drs Martinsen and Waldum that proper studies looking at the effect of proton pump inhibitors on non-bacterial infections would be interesting and important.
