AB Chronic wasting disease has been recognized as an important prion disease in native North America deer and Rocky mountain elks. Chronic wasting disease was first detected in imported elks from Canada in 2001 in Republic of Korea. More cases were also found in elks which were reared in 2004 and 2005. Epidemiologically related 268 elks were subjected to diagnosis on Chronic wasting disease after the detection of index case in 2004. Medulla oblongata, at the level of obex, palatine tonsil and medial retropharyngeal lymph node from them were examined using immunohistochemistry with a cocktail of two monoclonal antibodies (F89/160.1.5+F99/97.6.1). Diseasespecific prion protein(PrPcwd) was detected in 12 of them. Clinical signs were not observed in any of these elks. On the basis of the neuroanatomy of the medulla oblongata, at the level of obex, deposits of PrPcWD were observed mainly at the parasympathetic region of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve(DMNV) which is the target area for the confirmatory diagnosis and the nucleus of the solitary tract. The lymphoid tissues were confirmed as positive if any of the lymphoid follicles was immuno-labelled. This results supports that the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve(DMNV) is the most useful target area for the confirmatory diagnosis.
